Title: Product Development Engineer, Natural & Synthetic Fiber Composites

Reports to: Vice President Product Development

Based at:  4950 Kraft SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan

Job purpose:

To plan and carry out assigned design projects based on priorities established by the VP of Product Development and Senior Management.  To utilize experience and training to help create new products and designs that offer expansion of existing or new products.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities: 

  1. Create new product designs or improve existing products.

  2. Research new materials and work with purchasing.

  3. Interact with engineering and design associates to insure a cohesive team approach.

  4. Respond to and support sales team by providing technical assistance on product design and process design or process improvement.

  5. Provide technical support to the manufacturing team daily or as specifically assigned on a project by project basis.

  6. Monitor and report on activities and provide relevant management information.

  7. Carry out market and competitive product research.

  8. Perform the normal statistical testing that is required for the development of new products, market test comparisons of competitive products and identify specifications or performance characteristics of materials or composites. 

  9. Areas of experience required:

    1. Natural Fiber materials (Jute, Kenaf, Hemp, Sisal, Flax, Cotton)

    2. Fiber Composite Development

    3. Fiber Processing including Carding, Air Lay, Needle Punch, and Resonating

    4. 3 dimensional molding of composite materials

    5. 5+ years of direct experience

Personality: Self-driven, results-oriented with a positive outlook, and a clear focus on high quality and business profit. A natural forward planner who critically assesses own performance. Is able to get along with others and be a team player.

Specific Job Skills: Strong engineering back ground with minimum 5 years experience in non-wovens, utilizing natural and synthetic fibers. Must have experience in raw materials and composites that have applications in industries including auto, office furniture, recreational vehicles, commercial and residential construction

Education Requirements:

Engineering degree would be a plus but not required.

VAC FORM DESIGN ENGINEER

Candidate must be able to take a project from conceptual design, prototype, into production.  Strong CAD ability is required, preferably Solid Works, SDRC I-Deas, Unigraphics. Must be able to create working prototypes of designs, submit and maintain design documentation (i.e. drawings, BOMS, routings).

Experience in the following areas:

  • Vacuum form Design & Process (twin sheet a plus)
  • Returnable Packaging Design & Process
  • Prototype & production tool process
  • Water jet, CNC programming a plus
  • 2-5 years in design packaging & tooling
